Good metadata is key for research data access, discovery, and re-use. Metadata describes and provides information about your data. Data can be an image file, video, website, text document, database, spreadsheet, or other type of resource. Metadata provides information such as when data was created, by whom, what software was used to create it, what it is about, and how it is encoded. Metadata helps you and others understand data so it can be accessed, found, understood, and preserved over time. For many kinds of data, standard schema exist that facilitate data description and sharing.
